What does “j” mean in email?

This letter “j” in emails is a smiley emoticon that didn’t show properly. When an email is sent from an email program, for example Microsoft Outlook, it converts characters as “:)” or “:-)” into a distinct character using Wingdings font, which is not obtainable and available in other email programs.

The smileys typically show properly on a PC or Mac device, but devices that don’t have the Wingdings font installed, for instance an Android phone or iPad, only display its Unicode equivalent of 0x4A, which is the lower-case letter j.

Webmail clients that don’t maintain formatted text, as well as emails that have been forwarded several times, can also display the letter j instead of the intended emoticon.
